Creating heat in a hot box

Having been emptied last week our hot box got a fresh load of horse manure today. Thanks to Paul who arranged with his friends at Stanmer Park and to our rangers Will, Charlie and Peter who came with their pick up truck. To create enough heat for an early sowing of salads and herbs the manure needs to be fresh, not seasoned. A thick layer of compost will go on top so the roots of the plants are not in direct contact with the manure as it would burn them.
