The new year has arrived and we're back in the garden. The sun was shining today and most of the regular Thursday crew were there. The hot box was emptied of old compost and horse manure to make space for fresh manure and a top layer of new compost. When this is finished in a few weeks time it will generate enough heat for us to start growing herbs, chillies and salad crops straight away. Last year's hot box crop was a great success. We're still eating the pickled chillies. The manure we dug out was put onto our vegetable beds as it's been seasoned for a year now and will make perfect mulch. Hard work but well worth it.
The mushrooms are called King Alfred's cakes according to Darren.
